"Study for the Grand Plaza, Antwerp". Provenance: Estate of Colin Campbell Cooper, Santa Barbara, CA. The work is signed C. Cooper lower right on the painting and it is estate stamped on the reverse side.

Cooper was a widely traveled artist and was very prolific, and always making sketches and painting au plein aire in various. Provenance: The Estate of Colin Campbell Cooper administered by James M. There is absolutely no doubt concerning the authenticity of this painting. It is listed in Hansen's book on Cooper's work from the Cooper estate.

We will include a copy of this rare book with this painting. This work comes through the estate of Dewitt McCall and DeRu's Fine Arts of Laguna Beach, CA. The Gallery price for this beautiful work was 9,500.00. The work measures 7 X 11.5 inches and in the hand carved, 22K genuine gold leaf frame created by Richard Tobey of Los Angeles, it measures 12.50 X 17.50 inches. Frame and painting are in excellent condition.

The four corners have been re-enforced. The signature is original to the work. Born in Philadelphia, PA on March 8, 1856 into an upper class family. Encouraged by his family to pursue an art career, Cooper was further motivated by the art exhibition at the Philadelphia Expo of 1876.

He initially studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under Thomas Eakins followed by further study at Paris at Academies Julian, Vitti, and Delecluse. After working from 1895-98 as instructor of watercolor at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, he moved to New York City. An inveterate traveler, he made many trips to Europe, India (1913-14) and throughout the U. In search of subject matter. He first came to California to attend the Panama Pacific International Exhibition and spent the winter of 1915-16 in Los Angeles.

In 1921 he settled in Santa Barbara where he taught painting at the School of Arts. An impressionist, his style shows the influence of Monet. Although he is best known for his landscapes with architectural themes, he also painted florals, portraits, gardens, interiors and figures.
