Hawkings thumb print appears to a clear area at the base of the half title page alongside a black ink annotation signed by his nurse, Patricia Dowdy, stating "This is the right thumb print of Professor Stephen Hawking witnessed by Patricia Dowdy RN" and dated 6th December 2015 in her hand. Dowdy was suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in March 2016 and in March 2019 was struck off the nursing register after she had been found to have failed in providing appropriate care to Hawking.
